Blue Moon Valley<\/h2>\n

There are places that are difficult to describe in words. You look at the photos and think that the colors must have been slightly embellished during processing. But when you find yourself in Blue Moon Valley<\/strong>, you realize that nature sometimes knows how to create landscapes more beautiful than any postcard. For me, this place has become one of the most vivid impressions during my trip to the Chinese province of Yunnan.<\/p>\n

Here, turquoise water seems almost unreal, snow-capped peaks rise around, and a walk along the cascades of lakes resembles a trip through a fabulous park. If you are in Likiang, be sure to set aside at least a few hours to visit this valley \u2014 I am sure you will not be disappointed.<\/p>\n

Blue Moon Valley<\/p>\n

Where is the Blue Moon Valley<\/h3>\n

Blue Moon Valley is located in Yunnan Province in southwestern China, at the foot of the famous Yulongxueshan Mountain (Jade Dragon Snow Mountain). The nearest major tourist city is Lijiang, which is only about 15 kilometers from the valley.<\/p>\n

It is the proximity to the majestic snowy peak that makes the local views so unusual. While bright turquoise lakes sparkle below, snow-covered mountain slopes rise on the horizon. The contrast looks so impressive that it seems as if you are in several climatic zones at once.<\/p>\n

Why is the water here such an unusual color<\/h3>\n

The first thing every tourist notices is the amazing color of the water.<\/p>\n

Depending on the time of day, weather, and lighting, lakes can be milky blue, azure, deep turquoise, or almost emerald. This is not an optical illusion or artificial illumination.<\/p>\n

This effect is created by natural calcium carbonate deposits covering the bottom of lakes. Thanks to them, the water becomes extremely transparent and acquires that signature bluish-white hue, thanks to which the valley got its name.<\/p>\n

If you look at the valley from above, its shape resembles a crescent moon. That is why the place got a beautiful poetic name \u2014 Blue Moon Valley, or Valley of the Blue Moon.<\/p>\n

What to see in Blue Moon Valley<\/h3>\n

The main attraction is a system of small terraced lakes interconnected by cascades and waterfalls.<\/p>\n

New views are constantly being discovered during the walk. Somewhere, the water calmly reflects the mountains, and literally after a few tens of meters it turns into a noisy stream that flows down the snow-white mineral ledges.<\/p>\n

There are wooden paths, bridges and observation decks along the entire route. Thanks to this, you can walk around without hurrying to stop for photos and admire the surrounding nature.<\/p>\n

Almost every place here looks photogenic. It is no coincidence that many people come here specifically for the sake of beautiful pictures.<\/p>\n

Yulongxueshan Mountain is a perfect backdrop<\/h3>\n

Yulongxueshan Mountain, also known as the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain, deserves special attention.<\/p>\n

Its peaks are covered with eternal snow almost all year round. They look especially impressive against the background of bright blue lakes. Sometimes clouds completely hide the top, and after a few minutes the wind suddenly opens up the entire panorama. Such moments are remembered for a long time.<\/p>\n

It seemed to me that the combination of water, mountains and dense greenery creates the very atmosphere that makes you want to come back here.<\/p>\n

What else can I do<\/h3>\n

In addition to walking, tourists are offered small entertainment.<\/p>\n

You can ride decorated yaks or take memorable photos with llamas. For some, it’s just a fun attraction, while others like the opportunity to add a little local flavor to the trip.<\/p>\n

There are also several convenient recreation areas, cafes, souvenir shops and places where you can have a quiet snack between walks.<\/p>\n

Can I go into the water?<\/h3>\n

In the photos, sometimes it seems that you really want to get closer to the white mineral slabs or even go into the water.<\/p>\n

But you shouldn’t do that.<\/p>\n

Firstly, the water here remains very cold almost all year round, even in summer. Secondly, walking outside the equipped paths is prohibited in order to preserve the unique nature of the valley. But yaks and llamas feel quite comfortable here and often become the heroes of tourist photos.<\/p>\n

How to get there<\/h3>\n

The easiest way to get to the Blue Moon Valley is from Likiang.<\/p>\n

You can get there by taxi, organized transfer or as part of a tour group. The journey takes very little time.<\/p>\n

Please note that the valley is located on the territory of Yulongxueshan Nature Park, so the visit begins through the general entrance to the reserve.<\/p>\n

When buying a ticket, an ecological bus is usually paid for, which takes visitors to the main attractions of the complex.<\/p>\n

The best time to visit<\/h3>\n

In my opinion, the most comfortable months to travel are spring and autumn.<\/p>\n

The weather is pleasant at this time, there are a few fewer tourists, and the surrounding nature looks especially beautiful.<\/p>\n

If it is possible to choose the time of the visit, it is better to arrive in the morning. The soft sunlight highlights the unusual shades of the water, and there aren’t many people on the paths yet.<\/p>\n

National holidays in China should be avoided whenever possible, as huge flows of tourists visit the valley these days.<\/p>\n

What is important to know before traveling<\/h3>\n

The valley is located at an altitude of about 2,800 meters above sea level. Some travelers may experience mild symptoms of altitude sickness, such as dizziness, weakness, or shortness of breath.<\/p>\n

Therefore, it is better not to rush, drink more water and make small stops during the walk. Oxygen canisters are sold on site if necessary.<\/p>\n

Even in summer, it’s worth taking a light, warm jacket with you. Due to the height and proximity of the mountains, the weather here can be cool and windy.<\/p>\n

It is also better to choose comfortable shoes, because you have to walk quite a lot.<\/p>\n

Is it worth going?<\/h3>\n

For me, the Valley of the Blue Moon has become one of those places where photographs almost do not convey real impressions. In person, the water seems even brighter, the air is cleaner, and the snow\u2014capped peaks look much larger than expected.<\/p>\n

If you are traveling in Yunnan Province, do not limit yourself to just a walk in old Lijiang. Spend one day on a trip to the Jade Dragon Snow Mountain and make sure to visit Blue Moon Valley. Even if you have already seen many beautiful lakes and mountain landscapes, this place can still pleasantly surprise.<\/p>\n
