Antelope Canyon
If I were asked which place in the USA surprised me the most with its colors and unusual nature, I would without hesitation name Antelope Canyon. In the photos, it seems almost unreal: smooth wavy walls, incredible shades of red, orange and golden colors, the rays of the sun making their way through narrow cracks. But once you get here, you realize that the pictures convey only part of the impressions.
Many people have heard of the Grand Canyon, but Antelope Canyon has become one of the most unusual places in Arizona for me. Despite the fact that it does not have the status of a national park, it is rightfully considered a real natural gem of the American Southwest.

Where is Antelope Canyon
The canyon is located in the northern part of Arizona, near the city of Page. It is located on the territory of the Navajo Indian Reservation, so the management of the attraction is entirely under their jurisdiction.
It is the Navajo community that organizes guided tours, monitors visits to the canyon, and charges entry fees to the reservation.
Why does Antelope Canyon look so unusual
In fact, this is not a classic canyon, but a narrow slit canyon formed in sandstone.
Over the millennia, water after heavy rains and flash floods gradually eroded the soft rock, and the wind completed the work of nature, smoothing the lines and creating smooth curves of the walls.
As a result, amazing wave-like shapes have appeared that resemble folds of fabric or frozen sea waves. The reddish-red shades of sandstone are so unusual that, looking at them, it really feels like you are on another planet. It is no coincidence that many people compare this place with the Martian landscapes.
The name of the canyon also did not appear by chance. Its walls with characteristic red stripes reminded the first visitors of the coloring of the antelope skin.
Upper and Lower Antelope Canyon
Many people are surprised to learn that there are two canyons at once.
The Upper Antelope Canyon is considered the most famous. It is easier to get here, because the route is almost flat and does not require serious physical training. It is here that you can see the famous sun rays, which at certain times penetrate through narrow holes from above and create a fantastic play of light.
The Lower Antelope Canyon looks no less impressive, but walking here is a bit more difficult. There are stairs, narrow passageways, and small height differences along the route. But there are usually a little fewer people here, and the photos are just as good.
If time permits, I would recommend visiting both canyons. Each of them is beautiful in his own way.
Why do photographers from all over the world come here
Antelope Canyon has long been considered one of the most photographed places on the planet.
The lighting here is constantly changing. In just a few minutes, the shades of the walls become completely different. Warm golden colors prevail somewhere, saturated reds and purples appear somewhere, and sometimes the sandstone seems to glow from within.
The shots are especially spectacular on sunny days, when the rays of light penetrate into the narrow crevices between the rocks.
That is why there are separate excursions for professional photographers.
How is the visit
It is impossible to get into Antelope Canyon on your own.
Visits are only allowed if accompanied by a licensed Navajo guide. This is due not only to the reservation rules, but also to security issues. During heavy rains, even in remote areas, water can fill the narrow passages of the canyon very quickly.
When booking, you can usually choose one of two tour options.
The standard tour is designed for most tourists and runs at a faster pace.
The photo tour lasts longer. Participants have more time to take pictures, and they are also allowed to use a tripod or a monopod. It is forbidden to use such equipment during a regular tour.
When is the best time to go
In my opinion, it is best to plan a trip from March to April or from October to November.
During these months, sunlight highlights the relief of the sandy walls especially beautifully, and the air temperature is much more comfortable than in summer.
Due to the huge popularity of excursions, they are often sold out in advance. If the trip is already planned, it is better to book tickets online several weeks or even months in advance.
What to bring
There is a real desert around the canyon, so sand is literally everywhere here.
During a walk, the wind often picks up fine dust, especially in dry weather. For this reason, many travelers take a light protective mask or buff with them to make breathing more comfortable.
I also recommend putting on comfortable shoes, taking a bottle of water and freeing up the memory in your phone or camera beforehand. Believe me, you will want to take pictures here at almost every step.
Useful tips before visiting
There are several points to consider before traveling.
All tours are scheduled, so it’s better to arrive a little in advance. Groups that arrive late are usually not expected.
Since the number of visitors is limited, especially during high season, it is better to buy tickets in advance.
If your main goal is beautiful photos, choose a time closer to noon. It is then that the sun’s rays most effectively illuminate the inner walls of the Upper Antelope Canyon.
Is it worth going?
After visiting, I realized why Antelope Canyon is included in almost all lists of the most beautiful natural attractions in the United States. There are no huge waterfalls or high mountains here, but there is something else — the amazing work of nature, which for thousands of years has literally carved a real stone maze out of sandstone.
This is one of those places where you just want to stop, raise your head up and watch in silence for a few minutes as the sunlight slowly slides along the winding walls. It is such moments that are remembered much more strongly than any photos.
