Fortress history
- III–IV centuries – the Romans built the first fortifications to control the Balkans.

- 19th century – was captured by the Turks and transformed into a garrison stationed protecting the western borders of the empire and suppressing the discontent of the Bulgarians. The Ottomans modernized it, added bastions and barracks.
- 1885 – the fortress lost its military significance.
