Belogradchik fortress – Bulgarian fortress among the rocks

In the town of Belogradchik, among the fantastic cliffs, there is one of the most amazing structures in Bulgaria – Belogradchik fortress.

This unique fortification is located among the picturesque Belogradchik cliffs in the north-west of the country.

Key facts

• Location: near the town of Belogradchik, Bulgaria
• Built: 3rd century (by the Romans), expanded in the 14th and 19th centuries
• Feature: built into natural rocks up to 200 m high

Fortress history

• III–IV centuries – the Romans built the first fortifications to control the Balkans.
• 14th century – Bulgarian tsar Ivan Sratsimir strengthened the fortress.
• 19th century – was captured by the Turks and transformed into a garrison stationed protecting the western borders of the empire and suppressing the discontent of the Bulgarians. The Ottomans modernized it, added bastions and barracks.
• 1885 – the fortress lost its military significance.
