Colombo is the capital of Sri Lanka, and it seems that it is “necessary to come here.””But in fact, Columbo is not a necessary point at all.
CMB airport is located separately from the city, and if you go to the beaches (for example, Veligama, Galle, Unawatuna, Mirissa), then most often you:
- go immediately by transfer,
- or transfer to a train/bus, passing through the center,
- and sometimes the bus arrives at the bus station on the outskirts — and you don’t see Colombo at all.
Therefore, Columbo is not a must-have.

But it is convenient on the way back: if the flight is early in the morning, arrive in the evening, spend the night and leave for the airport without stress.
And that’s when the “1 day/1 night” format works perfectly.
My experience: I was in Colombo for 4 days, and to be honest, if you miss it, you won’t lose anything. The city does not have a wow effect, but it is interesting to observe life, people, contrasts and street food here.
